Statement from the Maryland Department of Disabilities Regarding White House Announcement on Tylenol and Autism
The Maryland Department of Disabilities notes the White House announcement on 9/22/25 concerning acetaminophen (Tylenol) use during pregnancy and autism. At this time, we urge the public and media to approach this topic with caution. Claims of causation between common medications and autism must be supported by clear, peer-reviewed scientific evidence. Public health policy and individual healthcare decisions should be guided by research that meets the highest standards of medical science. Premature conclusions risk spreading misinformation and may contribute to harmful stigma and anxiety.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that is not caused by vaccines. This is a fact that has been confirmed repeatedly by extensive scientific research across decades. The Maryland Department of Disabilities stands firmly with the medical and scientific communities in affirming that vaccines are safe, effective, and vital to public health.
As discussions around autism continue, it is essential to listen and learn from the voices and experiences of autistic individuals and their families. We advocate for a society that not only seeks to understand the origins of neurodiversity through credible research but also embraces inclusion, acceptance, and respect for all people, regardless of ability. We will continue to monitor developments and encourage ongoing, science-based dialogue that upholds the dignity and humanity of the autistic community. Autism is not a tragedy, but an essential part of human diversity. Autistic people are integral members of our society and should be accepted as such.
The Maryland Department of Disabilities remains committed to supporting individuals with autism and their families through policy, programming, and partnership. Our Autism Statewide Coordinator, Victoria Rodriguez-Roldan, leads the Advisory Stakeholder Group on Autism Related Needs (ASGARN) and recently released the Maryland Strategic Plan for Autism-Related Needs.
