Emergency Shelter Accessibility
State and local governments are responsible for keeping everyone safe during disasters. Under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), emergency shelters must be fully accessible and include people with disabilities alongside the general public.
Key Guidelines for Shelter Operators:
- Provide Support: Plan to accommodate individuals who need medical care, equipment, or supportive services in general population shelters.
- Avoid Unnecessary Exclusion: Do not turn away people with disabilities based on false assumptions about their care needs.
Resources & Assistance:
- Shelter Checklist: We converted the 67-page DOJ checklist into a concise survey. Click here to view the ADA Shelter Checklist.
